Dr Joseph Cheriyan

Consultant Physician and Clinical Pharmacologist

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust

Affiliated Associate Professor, University of Cambridge

Dr Joseph Cheriyan is a Consultant Physician and Clinical Pharmacologist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working within the Division of Experimental Medicine, and an Affiliated Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge. He directs the Cardiovascular Trials Office at the Cambridge Clinical Trials Unit and the Research Echocardiography service and is an ESH Accredited Hypertension Specialist.
 

With a background in academic clinical pharmacology and experimental medicine, including a 13.5-year Senior Director-level secondment at GlaxoSmithKline, his research focuses on translational cardiovascular medicine and early-phase clinical trials. He has extensive first-in-human trial experience, extending beyond cardiovascular medicine to supporting first-in-human studies in neurology and ophthalmology. His research interests span vascular pharmacology, inflammatory cardiovascular disease, and the development of digital and acoustic biomarkers.


Dr Cheriyan has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and secured more than £30 million in competitive research funding. He has served as Principal and Chief Investigator on numerous national and international trials, including adaptive platform studies in COVID-19 and Phase II mechanistic trials and Phase III cardiovascular trials.
